Opening of the blog

Hello you, who have somehow ended reading my first blog post. Welcome! As I have been reading various newspapers and been imposed to such flood of information also through facebook, I got an urge to share some of my thoughts on things and hopefully thus open the door for discussion and conversation. I also have a need to let other people know of things happening in the world today - things that should impact our lives and make us willing to possibly change our actions and/or attitudes. It does no one any good to live in a bubble thinking that all is perfect in life, when the reality is that if you are even reading this, you most likely belong to the small percentige of the world population who can wake up in the morning not being afraid of being killed or starving to death today.

A webpage named Global Issues (http://www.globalissues.org/) has listed some mind-blowing statistics on social, economical, political and environmental things. Here you can read of a few poverty facts and stats they've published in the fall 2010. Let me quote a couple of them:

"22,000 children die each day due to poverty"

"Around 27-28 percent of all children in developing countries are estimated to be underweight of stunted."

"Less than one percent of what the world spent every year on weapons was needed to put every child into school by the year 2000 and yet it didn't happen."

"A mere 12 percent of the world's population uses 85 percent of its water, and these 12 percent do not live in the Third World."

Of course things are not that simple, but there is some food for thought. Please go to the website I mentioned and dig deeper. It will only take a few minutes away from your day and might remind you of priorities in life.
